We read 'Rage,' Bob Woodward's new Trump book, so you don't have to
September 18, 2020 at 5:12 am 0
Whisper it low: Could Rage, out in bookstores this week, be the first Bob Woodward book in an age that's actually worth reading?  My answer: Yes, but only 50 percent of the thing. Only after Woodward, at age 77, has an Alice in Wonderland epiphany halfway through, and that changes the way he interviews Trump. At long last, with unusual honesty, Woodward becomes a visible character in his own decades-long story — and actually checks his own privilege.  They're strange things, Woodward books. They invariably break news, because Mr. I-Broke-Watergate convinces every source in Washington to speak to him eventually, and they usually have something jaw-dropping to say when the tape-recorder's on. (In the case of Rage, it's Trump  spilling his brains on COVID-19; the president kept calling Woodward because he was mad at being left out of Woodward's previous book, Fear.)    Read more...More about Donald Trump, Bob Woodward, Entertainment, Politics,

India's 'Bandish Bandits' is the cozy fall binge you need
September 18, 2020 at 5:12 am 0
In the six weeks since it released on Amazon Prime, you’ve either heard about nothing but Bandish Bandits or haven’t heard of it at all. I fall in the former camp, watching friends and family fall in love with the Hindi-language Indian drama series and its infectious soundtrack while I waited for “the right time” to binge all 10 episodes. That time is now. Bandish Bandits (that's pronounced "BUND-ish" bandits, despite the apparent wordplay) is the story of Radhe (Ritwik Bhowmik) and Tamanna (Shreya Chaudhry), two singers from vastly different artistic backgrounds who cross paths serendipitously in and proceed to work together — and fall in love. They're a modern musical Romeo and Juliet, complete with domineering family members, high-stakes concerts and competitions, and the nefarious added presence of social media. The entire series was helmed by creator Anand Tiwari. Read more...More about Entertainment, Television, India, Amazon Prime, and Watch Of The Week

'He wants you to ignore reality': Stephen Colbert savages Trump's unhinged town hall performance
September 17, 2020 at 5:03 am 0
With fewer than 50 days remaining until the presidential election, things are getting down to the wire. So much so that not only did Donald Trump actually put himself in a room with non-rusted-on, actually-somehow-still-undecided voters at a televised town hall this week for some reason, but Scientific American magazine also endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time in its 175-year history. (Hint: It wasn't Trump.) "At the heart of Scientific American's critique is Trump's abysmal response to COVID-19," Stephen Colbert noted on Wednesday night. "He's denied the science. He's lied about the science. He's mocked to the science. Come November 3, he's desperate that you'll forget why you're standing six feet apart and why you're swaddled like the guys who came to take away E.T." Netflix's 'Challenger: The Final Flight' is a touching reflection on a national space disaster
September 16, 2020 at 4:53 am 0
On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger launched into the sky, with thousands of eyes from homes and schools across America watching in great anticipation. It was supposed to be the first time a private citizen — and not just anyone, but a school teacher, Christa McAuliffe — made it into space.  Only 73 seconds later, tragedy struck. The shuttle broke apart, killing all seven passengers on board, including five NASA astronauts, an engineer, and McAuliffe. It devastated their families, the school children tuning in from their classrooms, and numerous other spectators in the process. Executive produced by J.J. Abrams and Glen Zipper, Netflix’s Challenger: The Final Flight revisits the tragedy that occurred that day in four parts. The opening episode introduces the Challenger crew members: 46-year-old commander Dick Scobee; 40-year-old pilot Michael Smith; 41-year-old payload specialist Gregory Jarvis; mission specialists Ellison Onizuka, 39, Ron McNair, 35, and Judy Resnik, 36;

'76 Days' puts you in the height of the pandemic in a Wuhan hospital
September 15, 2020 at 4:43 am 0
76 Days is a big story told in tiny moments.  Its premise is obviously major: Two directors, Weixi Chen and an anonymous reporter, embedded themselves in hospitals in Wuhan and Shanghai at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, during the 76-day lockdown of Wuhan. (A third director, Hao Wu, stayed in New York to edit the film.) But there's no unified narrative or obvious lesson being served up here, no analysis of the virus' origins, or the Chinese government's reaction, or the global consequences that followed. Indeed, 76 Days often seems not to be making any point at all. Which maybe, in itself, is the point. The day-to-day ordeal faced by these patients and their doctors and nurses is what it is, and worth bearing witness to in and of itself. Showtime space series 'Moonbase 8,' from the 'Portlandia' crew, gets its first trailer
September 15, 2020 at 4:43 am 0
If Avenue 5 on HBO and Space Force on Netflix haven't given you enough outer space antics to laugh at, Showtime has one more for you.  Moonbase 8, from Portlandia creators Jonathan Krisel and Fred Armisen, stars Armisen, John C. Reilly, and Tim Heidecker as would-be astronauts who are vying for their shot at being sent to the moon. If you're familiar with the work of the three stars then you can probably imagine the kind of slapstick hijinx that ensue. Not that the trailer gives up much. But it seems we won't be waiting too long. There isn't a premiere date for Moonbase 8, but the trailer says it's "coming soon" and the title listed on YouTube suggests it'll be 2020. Sir David Attenborough delivers stark warning in BBC doc 'Extinction: The Facts'
September 14, 2020 at 4:34 am 0
At 94 years old and with over 60 years of wildlife documentary-making under his belt, Sir David Attenborough is well-placed to share his thoughts about the future of our planet. And on Sunday, in the new BBC documentary Extinction: The Facts, the legendary presenter had a warning for all humans — that means you — about the creatures we share the Earth with. "Over the course of my life, I've encountered some of the world's most remarkable species of animals," Attenborough says at the start of the hour-long film. "Only now do I realise just how lucky I've been. Many of these wonders seem set to disappear forever. We're facing a crisis, and one that has consequences for us all. It threatens our ability to feed ourselves, to control our climate — it even puts us at greater risk of pandemic diseases such as COVID-19." The whole world is watching in the trailer for Netflix's 'The Trial Of The Chicago 7'
September 14, 2020 at 4:34 am 0
Do you want an Aaron Sorkin Netflix legal drama about the anti-Vietnam War protesters at the 1968 Democratic Convention who were arrested and charged with conspiracy? You can't handle an Aaron Sorkin Netflix legal drama about the anti-Vietnam War protesters at the 1968 Democratic Convention who were arrested and charged with conspiracy! Netflix just dropped the trailer for The Trial Of The Chicago 7, the second film Sorkin has both directed and written (2017's Molly's Game was the first). The cast is absolutely stacked, with Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Watchmen's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Succession's Jeremy Strong, Mark Rylance, Frank Langella, William Hurt, and Michael Keaton, and apparently at least one woman in there somewhere as well (Caitlin FitzGerald from Masters Of Sex, Succession, and Sweetbitter, to be specific). Notably, Cohen plays activist and Yippies movement co-founder Abbie Hoffman — and damn if that line reading at the end of
